Year 1 have been going tally chart crazy this week. We recapped what a tally chart is and how we create the gates. To create our own tally charts we went out to the front of the school to count the amount of cars, buses and vans that go passed the school. We found that there were so many more cars than buses.
When we got back to the classroom we compared our data. We used the data to create our own pictograms.

Last week in Numeracy we investigated capacity. We received a message from the Lonely Little Girl from our story asking for help. She wanted to find a container that would hold the most cubes, and a container that would hold the least! We had to carefully count the cubes into the containers then compare to find the one that was largest and the one that was the smallest!
On Tuesday we went to the Oriental Museum, Durham as the Climax to our China topic. We had such an exciting day, telling the story of the Chinese Zodiac, making rooster shadow puppets and we even got to touch real Chinese artefacts! We had a fantastic day and our behaviour was amazing.
Year 1 went World Book Day crazy yesterday! We all came to school dressed as our favourite book character, or a Little Men/Little Miss character. We started our day by having a parade in the hall with Nursery, Reception and Year 2 then we returned to the class to design our own Mr Men or Little Miss character. We even turned ourselves into characters too! We loved World Book Day!
To celebrate our amazing behaviour this half term we enjoyed a workshop with Chris Griffiths from the Northern Symphonia. We looked at creating rhythms, playing melodies and singing songs. We had a brilliant time!
Well done Class 12, I am really proud of your fantastic behaviour! Miss Farries Today was Yellow Day! We celebrated by coming to school dressed in yellow or we brought in items that were yellow. Then we enjoyed some lovely bananas and chocolate which were given to us by the Co-Op in Burnopfield! We went bananas for yellow day!
This week in Art we have been looking at different types of painting. We talked about what we could use to create paintings and thought it would be really exciting to use our fingers instead of paint brushes! So we created our very own Chinese Blossom Trees using our fingers. We had to be careful to use the correct colours and right amount of paint! It was a messy job but they all look amazing!
This term in Literacy we have looking at book called Journey by Aaron Becker. We have been watching a video version of the story on Youtube which we have loved and been so excited to find out what would happen next! We found out that the little girl in the story drew a magic red hot air balloon for the next part of her journey. So we went on our own hot air balloon adventure! We stepped inside the basket and went floating high into the clouds. We used our imagination to think about what we might see on our adventure then used our ideas to create a brilliant piece of extended writing!
In Numeracy we have been learning about directions and positional language. We used the Beebots to create a set of positions for our friends, we had to make sure the Beebots changed directions using a left turn or a right turn. It was Beebot mayhem but we all wrote some fantastic instructions and followed them really well!
GRRRR!!! Our topic this term is all about China so we have been painting our own Chinese Dragon's. We talked about what Chinese Dragon's symbolise in Chinese culture. Then we used thick and thin brushes to paint our own dragons. They looked amazing and we were super proud of our work!
